Understanding the Smog Crisis in Lahore
Lahore is among the top ten polluted cities across the world. The smog comprises vehicle fumes, industries, crop burning, and meteorological elements that cause a buildup of pollutants near the ground level resulting in a dense fog-like formation. With the increase in smog levels, the health risks also increase which lead to this valuable intervention from the government of Punjab.
Government’s Decision: Schools to Remain Closed
Because of the worsening air pollution crisis, schools across the Punjab have been closed for several days. This measure seeks to protect the lives of learners especially the most vulnerable population that is children and those with health complications such as asthma. The growth is useful in controlling the mobility of the affected persons outside where at the moment, exposure is dangerous because of the high levels of particles in the air.
Reasons Behind the School Closure Decision
Public Health Concerns: Because smog has adverse effects on the respiratory system, eyes, and overall health of students and staff, the government is focusing on students’ and staff’s well-being.
Escalating Pollution Levels: New measurements of air pollution have indicated severe pollution in the country and Lahore in particular meaning that it is not safe for children to be at school.
Need for Immediate Action: When air quality decreased even more, the government has decided on school closures as a temporary precaution to reduce risks and look for additional measures.
Impact on Students and Education
It is important for schools to be closed for the worse air quality but in adjusting to this, it affects academic calendars and learning of students. Online classes are being suggested for areas where the physical classes cannot be conducted due to COVID 19, which may not be possible for every student especially where there is little internet connection in the rural areas.
Smog and Its Health Implications
Environmental pollution in form of smog has the following effects to health, to the following categories of people; The youths, senior citizens, and those with complications. Key health concerns include:
Respiratory Problems: Like particles in smog, PM2.5 can reach the lungs and aggravate a person’s breathing difficulties, leading to shortness of breath, coughing or development of asthma or other respiratory illnesses.
Eye and Skin Irritation: Depending on the intensity Smog affects eyes and skin, making it uncomfortable and may aggravate when exposed for long.
Long-term Health Effects: In addition to short term effects of pollution more exposure to high levels of pollution becomes chronic effects like & impaired lung function and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases etc.
Government’s Plan for Managing Smog in Punjab
Besides closures of schools, the government is still developing a major strategic plan of addressing the issue of air pollution. This includes:
Promoting Cleaner Fuels: Promoting the efficient fuel and limiting the dense traffic of vehicles emitting a high level of emissions in populated areas.
Strengthening Crop Burning Regulations: The crop stubble is a common practice and the farmers burn crop stubble which is a main source of the smog. New laws and accountability along with other effective non-traditional ways are being suggested.
Raising Public Awareness: The main goal of educational potential of campaigns is to enlighten the population on smog threat and protective measures.
A Call to Action for Cleaner Air
The school closures have raised awareness of the need to solve air pollution in the Lahore district. Even though all these measures work to keep students safe in the short term, solutions in the long run are the best for lasting change. This means fighting the emissions from cars, supporting cleaner industries, and containing the dumping of pollutants on agricultural land, everyone can help make Lahore a cleaner and healthier city.
