Surge in VPN Usage in Pakistan Amid Internet Restrictions
Globally, people use VPNs to access restricted content and enhance online privacy. In Pakistan, its usage surged significantly in 2024, driven by internet restrictions and the need for secure access. In Pakistan, its usage has surged due to the blocking of platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and frequent internet disruptions. Users turn towards it for site accessibility, faster internet connections, and quicker downloads. However, the PTA requires users to register their Virtual Private Network IP addresses to avoid service interruptions.
PTA Calls for VPN IP Registration to Ensure Internet Service Stability
The PTA urges IT companies, software houses, freelancers, banks, and other entities to register their IPs for Virtual Private Network use. This registration ensures that their internet services remain unaffected in case of any disruptions.
Pakistan’s Minister for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, clarified in a press conference last month that the government had not intentionally slowed down internet speeds. She explained that the perceived slowdown was due to its widespread uses, as many users relied on them to access blocked platforms. The debate over VPN regulation and internet speeds highlights Pakistan’s ongoing challenges of balancing internet freedom and access. Its registration in Pakistan is a “one-window operation” accessible on the PTA and PSEB websites. The process is free and typically takes 2 to 3 days to complete.
